I am sat having a brew having done my walk .....Just replied to emails and checked the social media for messages. I didn't realise with doing the zoom classes how many messages etc I would get. I absolutely love the zoom classes its great to form bonds with people from all over the world and see everyones marvelous work. It's great to learn about people and learn different things off them too.
My style is very much my own now and I think it has come from my watercolour days. Oils always seemed so technical to me back when I was doing watercolours. I decided to not even think of the technical side and just quite literally 'paint'.
I've found in my classes that its the fear of the technical side that frightens people. Yes there is a painting method of fat over lean to think about, but I tend to tell people not to stress about that. My way of painting is fat over lean anyway and my way works for me....I think if you get what you want as the end result then don't stress over the method !!
Theres just a week to go until the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year Exhibition kicks off.......I am pleased to think I have one in this year. Its all online again but they are doing a virtual tour of it which will be interesting to see, never seen one of those before.
In previous years where I have got through its been a brilliant exhibition to go to especially the opening event. It has a real buzz about it at The Mall Galleries in London. Theres always some marvelous work especially from lots of people who I have admired for so long. The David Shepherd foundation do a brilliant job of trying to raise funds for the conservation of wildlife. .
I am also thinking about the Exhibition of Wildlife Art at the end of July , hopefully at Gordale garden Centre , South Wirral. Last year this went online too which was a new thing for Marion and her team. This exhibition has an army of followers so online was a success too. But it doesn't beat the actual exhibition and the people visiting it to see the wildlife artists there.
As artists we spend a lot of time on our own so this exhibition is a way to get us out of the studio and start meeting people........It's great to meet the people that follow us on social media and perhaps get new followers. It blows me away every year. I love meeting other artists too and I'm in awe of their work. It's great to create that network of artists so if you have any questions or problems then we can be there for each other.
I have a lot of unfinished work in my studio, commissions that I am nearly finishing but also wildlife canvases. I have three that need to go to my framer to be scanned then i can varnish them. A couple of large ones i have totally fallen out with LOL !!! I like to have a lot on the go as i need drying time between them . Oils take a lot longer to dry but they have a far superior finish to me . I find them so much better than acrylics but thats just me. There are some great acrylic artists out there.....i've tried but i cant get on with them at all so I'm not going to stress over it !!!
The question this year is if I am going to frame things or not because if they are sold online then they are easier to send unframed .
I'm keeping everything crossed that EWA will go ahead as an actual real life exhibition .
I'm not starting a zoom class in July so I can get on with getting things ready for the exhibition. Give everyone a break from me they must be well sick of me by now HA HA .
I am waiting for a new bespoke canvas coming ....the same size as 'After the Rain' so it's large......this is going to be the same series as 'After the Rain' ....'After the Snow' , from a great reference ....all will be revealed as i start it....I may film this one too. My wildlife ones take me a few months especially the big ones, lots of drying times between layers but theres nothing like trying to bring that subject alive on the canvas .
Ive also painted on some different surfaces which were rather ineteresting....this comes from watching youtube or instagram live in bed at night and ordering !!!! never ever do that !!! Dibond and Aluminium !! I only remember what ive ordered when it lands on the doorstep !!
This year I have my eye on a new easel to hold large canvases , we will see if I can persuade the other half its a great idea !!!!!
