News and thoughts from the last month

As we enter the start of July I know I am getting excited about The Exhibition of Wildlife Art (EWA) at the end of the month. Last year it had to be cancelled and go online. I know this was new for Marion and her team ,  I was told it was still a success. But for me nothing beats an actual in person exhibition !! I am near enough on burn out from painting for this. Yes I've been painting all year but getting towards the actual date is like a race as I have to think of drying times etc. All my work is scanned before varnishing , then framed so i have to think about the time limits on it. I have around 14 new paintings for the exhibition, the most I have ever had. Some are very large some are small. I've loved working on the larger ones. although a little daunting at first !!
I also have my commissions  ongoing in the background.
I seem to have acquired a stock of canvases , especially new ones so I have been trying those out. I still prefer the Harris Moore canvases out of all of them . These are usually made to order for me so I have to wait 2-3 weeks for them. I really need to organise myself and order a standard size. Ive never really thought about this before, I haven't a clue why !!!

My Main news for the last month  is that I now have my work in a Gallery - Carnes Fine Art , Mawdesley, Ormskirk, Lancashire. This is a really lovely gallery with some fantastic artists so I was really pleased to have work in there. www.carnesfineart.com/

We are coming to Week 4 for the Dexter Zoom class. Looking at the posts on our zoom facebook page everyone seems to be getting to grips with it. This is all about putting a mood to a reference picture and changing things on it. Putting your own stamp on it really. Sometimes when you get clients reference photos it's hard to do anything with them. You have to learn to pull things out of that reference and even exaggerate parts of it.
I'm not starting another zoom now until the end of August as i have a talk and demo at Blackpool Art Society mid August. I am needing a bit of a break . So it will be good to recharge my batteries .
The class for August will be all about fur and creating the texture in fur, we are painting a snow leopard which has a totally different kind of fur . Interesting !! A lot have already signed up for it which is brilliant so I know I have a full class to come back to !!

PictureSnow Leopard Study
Ive just had a couple of days of Wildlife Painting which always makes me happy !!
I finshed a small Snow leopard study which I am quite pleased with, so thats drying now. This was done on a new canvas, Winsor and Newton Professional.
Its ok but I would have to pick my subject if i was going to use it again. I found the paint soaked in a lot so you had to put a lot of layers on. Perhaps I am just spoilt with my Harris Moore ones !!

Trying out a new canvas
We started the new Zoom class today , painting a baby chimp. First was the underpainting. I am trying out a new canvas. A Winsor and Newton canvas , havent a clue where I got it from, another load of canvases I ordered when I was sat in bed looking at other artists and thought it was a good idea at the time !!!

The underpainting was quite easy on the chimp and the paint flowed quite well, however I found that I couldn't get the Raw Umber as dark as I normally do and it sinks  into the canvas....not in a bad way but getting it soft was pretty easy. So I decided to do one tonight of my own... a Snow Leopard .

Work in Progress of 'The Power'
This is the first time doing a blog , so I am not actually sure what goes into them !! The last year or so has been quite different and difficult for everyone. I have had to do new things which i had avoided for so long mainly to do with technology.

I started off with small cameras for live demos and then ended up doing zoom classes with a bigger camera thanks to the wonderful Bonny Snowdon. It has been a massive learning curve for me but without youtube tutorials i wouldn't of been able to do it.
